something about this time of year

Every year this time of year, something switches inside of me. Something about this late summer, early fall time is one of my favorite times of year. It brings back a flood of memories of my childhood and an easiness to my heart. I’m not sure if I am the only one who feels this way, but around here, it is undeniable. Maybe its the start of school, and all the kids going back. Maybe it’s the small relief from the hot and humidity of summer. Something changes. It is a time of year that completely blends the spirit of summer but the soul of fall. I catch myself holding onto those last few weeks of summer, trying to cram in every last lake or beach trip, baseball game, or late evening walk. But yet, I cannot wait for the coolness of fall. Windows open and fall breezes blowing through the house, football and  county fairs. It is so funny to me how we can  have such distinct things that instantly will take us back to when we were kids.

For me, riding on the lake and the scent of a campfire burning across the lake water is an instant trip back to my childhood. We used to go on the lake with a family we knew and spend all day swimming, boating and enjoying the hot summer sun. In the evenings we would make a campfire and roast marshmallows for smores. It sounds so storybook- but it really was what we did. I remember riding on the boat well after the sun went down. Its probably one of my most favorite memories of my childhood.

Saturday evening, we did just that. John and I went out on the lake around 6pm. John fished while I read a book and soaked it all in. As we were riding back to the dock after the sun went down, I caught that smell, that feeling. I was instantly ten years old, back on Lake Norman.
